Puberty- the stage of growth and development when the body becomes capable of producing offspring
Secondary Sex Characteristics- are physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty
Female Reproductive System- consists of organs in the female body that are involved in producing offspring
Mons Veneris- the fatty tissue that covers the front of the pubic bone and serves as a protective cushion for the internal reproductive organs
Labia Majora- are the heavy folds of skin that surround the opening of the vagina
Labia Minora- two smaller folds of skin located within the labia majora
Clitoris- a small, highly sensitive structure located e the opening of the urethra
Hymen- a thin membrane that stretches across the opening of the vagina
Ovulation- the release of a mature ovum from one of the two ovaries
Fallopian Tube- a tube four inches long that connects an ovary to the uterus
Cervix- the lowest part of the uterus and connects the uterus to the vagina
Vagina- a muscular tube that connects the uterus to the outside of the body
Menstrual Cycle- a monthly series of changes that involve ovulation, changes in the uterine lining, and menstruation
Menstruation- the period in the menstrual cycle in which the unfertilized egg and the lining of the uterus leave the body in a menstrual flow
Corpus Luteum- a temporary gland that secretes progesterone
Progesterone- a hormone that changes the lining of the uterus
Toxic Shock Syndrome- a severe illness resulting from infection with toxic-producing strains of staphylococcus
Premenstrual Syndrome- Also known as PMS, is a combination of physical and emotional symptoms that affect a female a week to ten days prior to menstruation
Amenorrhea- the absence of menstruation
Pelvic Examination- an exam of the internal female reproductive organs
Pap Smear- a screening test in which cells scraped from the cervix are examined to detect cervical cancer
Breast Self-Examination- a screening procedure for breast cancer in which a female checks her breasts for lumps and other changes
Mammography- a highly sensitive x-ray screening test used to detect breast lumps and is a highly effective tool in the early detection of cancer
Mammogram- the image of the breast tissue created by mammography and is read by a qualified physician
Fibroadenoma- a lump that is formed when fluid becomes trapped in a lymph duct
Endometrium- the tissue that lines the uterus
Endometriosis- a condition that occurs when tissue similar to the endometrium is found outside its normal location
Endometrial Implants- growths outside the surface of the uterus and they can occur on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the ligaments that support the uterus, the internal area between the vagina and rectum, and the lining of the pelvic cavity.
