I Will Keep My Body Systems Healthy
Key Vocab
Cell- the smallest living part of the body
Tissue- a group of similar cells that work together
Organ- a body part consisting of several kinds of tissue that do a particular job
Body Systems- a group of organs that work together to perform a main body function
Nervous System- carries messages to and from the brain and spinal cord and all other parts of the body
Central Nervous System- consists of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System- consist of the nerves that branch out from the central nervous system to the muscles, skin, internal organs, and glands
Brain- a mass of nerve tissue that acts as the control center of the body
Cerebrum- the largest part of the brain and controls the ability to memorize, think, and learn.
Cerebellum- the part of the brain that controls and coordinates muscle activity
Brain Stem- the part of the brain that controls the functions of the internal organs
Spinal Cord- a thick column of nerve cells that extends from the brain down through the spinal column
Neuron- a nerve cell that is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system
Axon- an elongated fiber that carries impulses away from the cell body to the dendrites of another neuron
Dendrites- are branching fibers that receive impulses and carry them to the cell body
Reflex Action- an involuntary action in which a message is sent to the brain via the spinal cord, is interpreted, and is responded to immediately
Cardiovascular System- transports nutrients, gases, hormones, and cellular waste products throughout the body
Plasma- the liquid component of blood that carries blood cells and dissolved materials
Red Blood Cells- transport oxygen to body cells and remove carbon dioxide from body cells
Hemoglobin- an iron-rich protein that helps transport oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood
White Blood Cells- attack, surround and destroy pathogens that enter the body and prevent them from causing infection
Pathogen- a germ that causes disease
Platelet- a particle that helps the blood clot
Artery- a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart
Vein- a blood vessel that returns blood to the heart
Capillary- tiny blood vessel that connects arteries and veins
Coronary Artery- a blood vessel that carries blood to the heart muscles
Pulmonary Artery- a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen and release carbon dioxide
Heart- a four-chambered muscle that pumps blood throughout the body
Atrium- one of the upper two chambers of the heart
Ventricle- one of the lower two chambers of the heart
Vena Cava- one of two large veins that returns blood rich in carbon dioxide to the right atrium
Aorta- the main artery in the body
Heart Rate- the number of times the heart contracts each minute
Pulse- the surge of blood that results from the contractions of the heart
